AAE 2023-2024 Annual Report
Dear Fellow AAE Members,
During my year as AAE President (2023 – 2024) I frequently closed reports and addresses by recognizing that the future for endodontics is bright. This positive outlook was reinforced when I viewed the recently produced video, Endos Rising, which highlighted AAE’s achievements and events during 2023-24. I look back on my experiences during that year, I continue to feel bullish about our future.
Record numbers of student members were in attendance at AAE24 to take in clinical and scientific presentations, pick the brains of current residents, and with hopes of having face time with program directors. The camaraderie among endodontists was palpable to these young folks who strive to gain acceptance into an endodontic program, who are understandably impressed by the culture that pervades our specialty. We are also known to throw a good party!
Applications to endodontic programs have been trending upwards for several years, and this year was no exception. Having recently completed the application cycle for the class which will enter in 2025 (at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine) I can attest to not only the robust number, but also to the high quality of the applicants.
The bright future of endodontics would be evident to anyone who has attended APICES, our annual resident convocation. The programming is developed by our Resident and New Practitioner Committee, which has launched many early career endodontists onto a leadership path. Having the opportunity to participate in a panel along with the presidents of Foundation, American Board of Endodontics, and College of Diplomates helped the residents understand the distinct, but interrelated roles of each organization.
Another indicator of a bright future came to light last summer at the joint meeting of the corporate community and our Directors of Advanced Education Programs in Endodontics. we were able to share data from an AAE commissioned study by Fluent which demonstrated that endodontists had increased their share of endodontic procedures compared to those done by general dentists. The same study showed the reverse trend among other dental specialties. I would like to attribute this to the success of our public awareness campaigns.
Our public awareness campaign is related to one of our main strategic goals: The public will value saving their natural teeth and seek endodontists, the specialists in saving teeth, for their care.
And my presidential year afforded so many opportunities to represent our specialty in the public arena. AAE provides those of us in volunteer leadership with professional media training, which is so helpful when you function as the spokesperson for our specialty. Misinformation and disinformation about endodontic procedures has a very long history. I was aware when I started practice over 40 years ago when the very occasional patient would share a magazine article or cassette tape where someone was pushing long disproven claims based upon the focal infection theory, as well the alleged conspiracy of organized dentistry to suppress these “findings”. Today this is exacerbated by the fact that so many people get their “news” from social media, which often serves as an echo chamber for their own particular biases, and as an amplifier for misinformation, disinformation and conspiracy theories. The association feels that the best strategy to counter misinformation is to keep emphasizing the positive messages regarding root canal safety, the value of saving natural dentition, and the special role of endodontists in saving teeth, relieving toothache pain and treating dental trauma. This is why AAE presidents perform satellite media tours, which get these positive messages out to so many media outlets serving markets across the US, and conduct individual interviews through broadcast and print media.
I previously referenced the AAE Strategic Plan. A proud accomplishment of this year was the successful update and approval of that plan by your AAE Board of Directors, who were greatly assisted by AAE’s amazing staff.
One goal from our previous plan, which focused on the dental profession as a whole, was expanded into two complementary goals. One focuses on developing and maintaining a body of knowledge to advance the specialty and a second focuses on advocating for the best quality of endodontic care by utilizing that body of knowledge . That body of knowledge will be enhanced by the Core Outcome Set being developed by an AAE committee, which will allow more homogeneity in endodontic studies and enable us to base our practices on a higher level of evidence. We also expect the updated trauma guidelines and updated position statement on the use of CBCT to be released soon from their respective special committees.
AAE has been steadily increasing its emphasis on advocacy in recent years. Our Advocacy Team monitors what’s going on at state and national levels, allowing the association to sign on to letters of support and engage in other lobbying efforts supporting legislation that benefits our patients, dental students and residents, our educator community, our members in private practice and the dental profession as a whole. The Advocacy Team also represents our interests with other dental groups, dental insurance directors, dental service organizations, and anywhere where endodontics needs a voice. I had the great experience of representing the AAE in the ADA Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill in March. The association continues to bolster our advocacy team and prioritize their endeavors.
As a full-time educator it is my habit to attend the Annual Session of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA).
This year’s meeting was well attended by endodontic educators, many of whom attended an AAE dinner in their honor. I enjoyed meeting members new to the educator community and catching up with old friends.
At this year’s meeting in New Orleans I saw the presentation of an ADEA plenary speaker, Mark Esposito, an notable author, Harvard professor, and expert on Artificial Intelligence and the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which we are now experiencing. He gave insight on how we as leaders in oral health care can prepare to thrive and work together with emerging technologies. The takeaway was his sentiment that there is nothing to fear from Artificial Intelligence. This was a comforting message in light of a news release I recently read a news story on the first complete dental procedure performed on a patient by a robotic device. The JOE published a clinical report on endodontic microsurgery performed with an autonomous robotic system. Virtual reality, robotics, artificial intelligence are all part of our futures. I am optimistic about the future of endodontics, but know change is inevitable. We need to embrace change and make it work for us, so AAE staff and leadership strive to gain as much knowledge as possible on emerging technologies and their potential impact on our members.
Data from ADA’s Health Policy Institutes shows an increase in dentist associating with DSOs as well as a trend for dental specialists, including endodontists associating with private equity. My attendance at the Dykema DSO Conference in July 2023 afforded an insider view of that industry. After listening to panels representing private equity, I left the conference with the impression that there is little focus on the dentists they employ or for the patients that they treat. Fortunately, AAE Leadership feels a responsibility to represent and support our members regardless of the practice model they choose. We stay attuned to changes in technology, workforce, marketing and communication, and legislation. Our association is nimble and responsive to our members’ needs. Our professional staff and volunteer leadership keep our strategic plan up to date.
The AAE continues to have a strong presence on the international stage. International organizations look to the AAE as world leaders in promoting quality endodontic care and as partners for collaboration on projects with global impact. Dr. Flake and I attended the the ESE’s Biennial Congress in Helsinki in Sept. 2023., I had been invited to join a technology panel with colleagues from the UK and gave a requested presentation on AAE’s Case Difficulty Assessment Application. At our annual sessions the AAE Executive Committee convenes a meeting with the leadership of ESE, IADT, IFEA, as well as those representing other organized endodontics in countries and regions outside of the US. AAE’s International membership has grown to 1,283, and 705 International members attended AAE24.
Behind the scenes, AAE had a successful launch of a new Association Management System (AMS). The new AMS brings improvements that will improve our member experience and included (among other benefits) upgrades to the member portal, simplification of our membership renewal process, and aid in registration for AAE meetings. These and other enhancements will facilitate AAE staff in performing their jobs and better serving the needs of our members.
My year as president of the AAE was an amazing experience. I want to thank our members for entrusting me with this responsibility. I also want to say thank you again to AAE’s dedicated staff, headed by Executive Director Ken Widelka, for their hard work, their expertise, and for always making those of us in volunteer leadership look good. The future of endodontics is bright!

Recent Public Survey Reveals Intriguing Stats About Public's Oral Health Outlook, Knowhow and Habits
If you knock out a tooth while playing a sport, knowing what to do is crucial for saving your natural smile. At the same time, it’s important not to let fear keep you out of the game. 36% of adults say they never played sports over fear of getting a tooth knocked out, and 30% say they fear a knocked-out tooth more than a broken bone or torn muscle.
Nearly a third of adults say they’ve cracked a tooth while eating a holiday meal, and more than 2 in 5 say they planned to avoid sweets this past holiday season because they were worried about experiencing painful tooth issues. The good news is that 3 in 5 adults claim that one of their New Year’s resolutions was to improve their oral health, including brushing or flossing more often and cutting back on sugar/sweets and coffee/tea.

AAE24's Celebrate! event at Universal Studios was certainly a fan favorite! Attendees had Simpson's Land and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter to themselves for the evening with everything from a real-life Krusty Burger to Ollivander's Wand Shop at their disposal. Themed carnival games and rides proved that even teeth-saving superheroes are kids at heart.
You also partook in an important General Assembly meeting and installed a new officer slate. Thank you for helping make AAE24 a star-studded success!
Future-Focused With a New Strategic Plan
On December 11th, 2023, the AAE Board of Directors approved a revised Strategic Plan, which will serve the association into 2026. This revision was the result of a lot of work on the part of the Board and AAE staff alike, guided by our organization’s Core Purpose: To advance the art and science of endodontics and to promote the highest standards of patient care.
Our previous plan included a goal that focused the public (The public will value saving their natural teeth and seek endodontists – the specialists in saving teeth – for their care), our members (The AAE will be recognized for providing an environment that is welcoming and supports the diversity of its members as leaders for the global advancement of endodontics, and the dental profession (The dental profession will value endodontists as partners with advanced expertise in restoring oral health).
Our public facing goal (The public will value saving their natural teeth and seek endodontists – the specialists in saving teeth – for their care) has been very successful. The Worth Saving Campaign and Save Your Tooth Month have created a new level of public awareness of the importance of saving natural dentition and of the special role endodontist play in saving teeth.
Our member-facing goal (The AAE will be recognized for providing an environment that is welcoming and supports the diversity of its members as leaders for the global advancement of endodontics, and the dental profession) will continue to create value in AAE membership regardless of the practice model or setting a member chooses. It continues to celebrate the diversity of talents and backgrounds of our members with the AAE Leadership Development Program. It includes new priority strategies aimed at supporting our current educator members and increasing the number of endodontists who teach.
The Board decided that the former goal focused on the dental profession was in need of revision and expansion. It was replaced by two different but related goals: Develop and maintain a body of knowledge to advance the specialty and Advocate for quality endodontic care.
The body of knowledge developed and maintained would include promoting endodontic studies utilizing the new Core Outcome Set, which will enhance the specialty by enabling endodontists to base their practice on a higher level of evidence and enhance the value that the dental profession places on endodontists. The body of knowledge will also include tracking provider and practice trends. The body of knowledge will inform policy going forward and aids in the development of clinical resources and assessment tools of value to endodontists and to the dental profession.
Advocating for quality endodontic care will utilize the body of knowledge developed and maintained for AAE’s growing advocacy role. More outward facing efforts of advocacy would have communities of interest looking to the AAE for our position on matters related to oral and systemic health at a state and federal level. Advocacy efforts will also increase awareness of endodontics’ relevance to oral and systemic health. The more inward focus of advocacy would be our efforts at optimizing coding and reimbursement for endodontic procedures as well as advocating that endodontic care performed by generalists be done to the same standard of practice as that performed by endodontists.
After our strategic planning exercise in October, AAE staff spent many hours refining language, adding outcomes, KPIs, strategies, and tactics necessary to implement the plan. Some further refining was done by AAE Executive Committee in collaboration with senior staff prior to the approval by the full Board of Directors.

Statement of Financial Position
Foundation for Endodontics
President’s Message
Research, Education, Outreach and Development
Dear Colleagues,
April 2024 marked the end of my term as president of the Foundation for Endodontics; two years have gone quickly. I have been blessed to have had the opportunity to lead the Foundation, but I have not done it alone. I am grateful for the leadership and camaraderie of my fellow Trustees of the Board. They have worked diligently to elevate our specialty through fulfilling our mission to support endodontic research, education, access to care, and engagement.
We continue our work toward achieving four strategic goals:
- Advance impactful endodontic research that improves oral health.
- Enhance the quality of endodontic education at all levels.
- Support access to endodontic care led by endodontic specialists to improve oral health in underserved communities/populations.
- Define our identity, foster community, and reinforce our brand to increase engagement in the Foundation’s mission.
I applaud my colleagues who have delivered on strategies to further these goals. A few highlights from the past year, include:
- At the beginning of 2024, we launched the Part-time Educator Development Grant, a unique program to support dedicated part-timers who are vital to endodontic predoctoral and postgraduate programs. This grant plays a role in enhancing endodontic education at all levels and supports the educators who are prioritizing the next gernation of specialists..
- Between 2016 and 2022, Foundation volunteers provided over 400 endodontic procedures through our International Access to Care program. 2024 marks our return to the program, post-pandemic, with a new host partner, Great Shape! Inc. to provide the highest standard of endodontic care. We look forward to a collaborative and strong partnership and allowing endodontists opportunities to treat a population in need.
- Thanks to a five-year commitment of $750,000 from Dentsply Sirona, we are thrilled to offer three $50,000 Freedom Scholarships, annually, to merited residents, to cover the cost of post-graduate endodontic tuition, courses, equipment, books, and/or fees for training related purposes. The Foundation has listened to feedback about the student debt crisis and is thrilled to be supporting residents in this way.
- The Foundation has enhanced its capabilities to provide you access to a unique donor portal, which is your main source for viewing your philanthropic giving history and managing your future generosity.
- A Special Committee on Governance created a unique policy manual to guide the Foundation's efforts. The special committee continues its work with a thorough review of the Foundation's bylaws.
We are grateful to our donors; your support makes these programs (and others) possible. Each one of you is a key part of our community, and I appreciate the opportunities I have had to engage with so many of you in the past two years. I look forward to seeing how the Foundation thrives.
Thank you for the opportunity!
With appreciation,
Margot Kusienski, D.M.D.

ABE: American Board of Endodontics
President’s Message–Your Board is Never Bored
Congratulations to our 74 new Diplomates!
My commute to work each day is mostly by train and, although it’s a long ride, it gives me time for reflection – sometimes wide awake and brimming with random thoughts and half-baked ideas, other times, not so much. For the past six years serving as a Director of the American Board of Endodontics, the greatest honor of my professional career, my thoughts have often turned to the ABE. In particular, how can the ABE encourage more endodontists to pursue Board certification while keeping our promise to all current and future Diplomates to maintain the rigor and relevance of this meaningful achievement?
Have we kept our promise to you? This year we will honor 74 new ABE Diplomates at the Grossman Ceremony on Thursday of AAE24. You are all welcome to attend and join us in congratulating our new Diplomates. In 2023, the ABE examined 196 Oral Exam candidates and reviewed 94 Case History Portfolios. The Written Exam was administered to 223 candidates through Pearson Vue on May 16, 2023. In addition, 81 ABE Diplomates completed their recertification requirement in 2023.
My sincere thanks to our dedicated group of past directors who continue to volunteer to serve as examiners for both the Oral Exam and Case History Portfolio. We simply could not examine this number of candidates each year without their help and support. We are also extremely fortunate to be supported by our incredibly dedicated and tireless ABE staff, Ivana Bevacqua, Patricia Scaletta, and Kerri Hannen. They have made my job much easier and do it all with intelligence, humor, and never a complaint. It has been a pleasure working with all of you.
One of our major projects for 2023, was a deep dive review and revision of our Case History Portfolio Examination Guidelines. Many changes were made after careful consideration and input from program directors, current Diplomates, and those on the path to Board certification. The entire Case History Portfolio committee, especially the Chair, Dr. Kent Sabey, and co-Chair Dr. Meetu Kohli, deserves special thanks for pushing to finish this project in time for the May 1, 2024 Case History Portfolio Exam submission date.
Our major project for 2024 is a complete Job Task Analysis (JTA) for all three exam components to ensure ongoing validity of the exam. The goal is to make sure our assessment process and content accurately reflects current endodontic practice and the best available evidence. Dr. Garry Myers is chairing the JTA committee (essentially the entire Board and Counselors, and a few outside content experts).
Although I have identified a few Directors by name for specific projects, it’s really the selfless work and synergy of the entire ABE Board of Directors that makes this organization so exceptional. Thank you to the entire Board and Counselors: Drs. Avina Paranjpe (incoming President), Brian Bergeron, Sami Chogle, Anibal Diogenes, Scott Doyle, Melissa Drum, Joseph Dutner, Meetu Kohli, Neville McDonald, Garry Myers, Frank Portell, Kent Sabey, and Renato Silva. I would also like to welcome our two newest Board members: Drs. Keith Boyer and Paul Falcon (beginning after AAE24). The Board has a self-nomination process that allows any Diplomate to nominate themself to serve on the Board. It is a huge commitment, but something you will always remember.
Now back to our promises kept theme: Let’s see a show of (virtual) hands — Did you, at any point in your endo specialty training, or even as early as the interview process, promise your program director that you would become Board certified? Yes? If you kept your promise – congratulations and thank you! If not, why not now? The best gift you could give your program director is to become Board certified (second best, possibly a new Porsche).
Some of you may be familiar with the classic children’s book and animated movie, The Little Engine That Could. For those that have forgotten the tale, it’s a story about a small, but very determined, train that helps a much larger broken-down train make it over a mountain pass for a very special delivery, when other trains would not. It’s a lesson about the value of optimism and hard work (Reference: Wikipedia – my favorite non-evidence-based source). It could also be a metaphor for the pursuit of Board certification. It’s not easy – if it were, it would have no value – but I’m confident that anyone interested and motivated enough to read this letter has what it takes to become Board certified.
For real life stories about the journey to ABE certification from a wide range of new Diplomates, please see the “All A-Board” series in the AAE Communique.
There is always more room on the ABE train – I promise you won’t regret the journey!
