AAE 2023-2024 Annual Report
Witnessing a Rebirth
“Renewal is not just innovation and change. It is also the process of bringing the results of change into line with our purposes”—John W. Gardner
Dear Fellow AAE Members,
As I look back and reflect upon my 2022-2023 Presidential Year, I think of a period of renewal and advancement for the American Association of Endodontists. Following a difficult period caused by a global pandemic which so profoundly affected our lives, the lives of our families, our friends, our patients, our businesses, and our association, it was time to get back on track and to enter a new era of “normalcy”—a rebirth of sorts. Economic and political strife in our country added additional obstacles to overcome, but our ability to return, stronger than ever, was a testament to the strength and insight of our staff and leadership, and to the great resiliency and dedication of our members as we embarked upon a new era of endodontics in a changed and damaged world.
The theme of my Presidency was change and our ability to harness change to move forward. As I noted in my Presidential Address at AAE23, changes should never be viewed as an obstacle to existence, rather an opportunity to move forward, to improve, and to create progress in line with our mission. Our leadership understands this, and will continue to listen to members, inspire, be innovative, and responsive so that our specialty will continue to be relevant and so that the AAE will continue to be the world leader in endodontics in the future.
What's New This Year
The 2023-2024 membership year yielded over 50 media interviews and 200 million-plus views generated from more than 3,500 outlets that ran the interviews!

Recent Public Survey Reveals Intriguing Stats About Public's Oral Health Outlook, Knowhow and Habits
If you knock out a tooth while playing a sport, knowing what to do is crucial for saving your natural smile. At the same time, it’s important not to let fear keep you out of the game. 36% of adults say they never played sports over fear of getting a tooth knocked out, and 30% say they fear a knocked-out tooth more than a broken bone or torn muscle.
Nearly a third of adults say they’ve cracked a tooth while eating a holiday meal, and more than 2 in 5 say they planned to avoid sweets this past holiday season because they were worried about experiencing painful tooth issues. The good news is that 3 in 5 adults claim that one of their New Year’s resolutions was to improve their oral health, including brushing or flossing more often and cutting back on sugar/sweets and coffee/tea.
AAE President Touts Endodontics in Fall 2023 Satellite Media Tour
Dr. Craig S. Hirschberg, AAE President of 2023-2024, spoke with several news reporters throughout the country about what to do if one knocks out a tooth and how one should react if they are told they need a root canal treatment. He took part in over 20 interviews, and he also recorded audio and video news releases that aired nationally.

Other Media Successes
Media successes outside of the obvious ones we’ve covered are aplenty. And any time a reporter comes to us, it’s indicative of the work we’ve put into elevating our online presence, because the more of a splash we make for our digital footprint – the more likely it is that reporter types approach us. Coverage begets coverage, and amazing things can happen:
- Dr. Hirschberg appeared on 22 News WWLP's "Mass Appeal" and NBC Channel 8 Tampa's "Daytime".
- Dr. Flake appeared on "Coffee With America," reaching an audience of two million via 317 television placements.
- Dr. Flake contributed to The New York Times' "5 Things You Do That Keep Dentists in Business".
- AAE mass-distributed "Why a Healthier Mouth Equals a Healthier You" to 1,200+ print and online outlets, reaching an audience of 154 million.
Branded Social Content
Our team is hard at work creating content that is in line with our revamped style guidelines, which have been in effect since early spring of 2023. We strive to create deliverables that:
- Are modern, clean, and fresh
- Deliver key messages to members, patients and the general public
- Help members communicate and engage with their patients on social media
- Reinforce the AAE brand

Events Recap
educator WORKSHOP
On Aug. 25 and 26, 2023, the AAE hosted its annual educator workshop in Phoenix, Arizona. Participants gathered to share strategies and concepts, discuss opportunities and challenges of changing technology, and used AAE resources to inspire collaboration between endodontic educators in their respective institutions and beyond.
APICES 2023 unites Residents in PHOENIX
The AAE hosted another successful resident-focused event in Phoenix, Arizona in August of 2023, where participants engaged in academic and social events! APICES is an annual event made for AAE Resident members and new practitioners, curated by fellow resident and new practitioner colleagues.
MEMBERS GATHER TO TALK endo & PAIN
Insight Track: Pain took place Nov. 2-4, 2023 at PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and offered high-quality, in-depth education about pain pathways, current pharmacology, flare-ups, emergencies, and more.
AAE24: Lights, Camera, Endo
AAE24 took place from April 17-20 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Endodontists gathered from around the world to learn, connect, and explore in sunny LA.
The meeting offered an incredible lineup of presentations within a variety of educational tracks, including Future of Endodontic Practice, Pulp Biology, New Voices, Outcomes, Non-surgical Root Canal Therapy, Surgical Root Canal Therapy.
When attendees were not immersed in our educational offerings and hands-on workshops, many enjoyed all that the City of Angels had to offer. You also made sure to attend our mainstay favorite events like the Welcome Reception, President’s Breakfast, and Edgar D. Coolidge Brunch.
AAE24's Celebrate! event at Universal Studios was certainly a fan favorite! Attendees had Simpson's Land and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter to themselves for the evening with everything from a real-life Krusty Burger to Ollivander's Wand Shop at their disposal. Themed carnival games and rides proved that even teeth-saving superheroes are kids at heart.
You also partook in an important General Assembly meeting and installed a new officer slate. Thank you for helping make AAE24 a star-studded success!
Future-Focused With a New Strategic Plan
On December 11th, 2023, the AAE Board of Directors approved a revised Strategic Plan, which will serve the association into 2026. This revision was the result of a lot of work on the part of the Board and AAE staff alike, guided by our organization’s Core Purpose: To advance the art and science of endodontics and to promote the highest standards of patient care.
Our previous plan included a goal that focused the public (The public will value saving their natural teeth and seek endodontists – the specialists in saving teeth – for their care), our members (The AAE will be recognized for providing an environment that is welcoming and supports the diversity of its members as leaders for the global advancement of endodontics, and the dental profession (The dental profession will value endodontists as partners with advanced expertise in restoring oral health).
Our public facing goal (The public will value saving their natural teeth and seek endodontists – the specialists in saving teeth – for their care) has been very successful. The Worth Saving Campaign and Save Your Tooth Month have created a new level of public awareness of the importance of saving natural dentition and of the special role endodontist play in saving teeth.
Our member-facing goal (The AAE will be recognized for providing an environment that is welcoming and supports the diversity of its members as leaders for the global advancement of endodontics, and the dental profession) will continue to create value in AAE membership regardless of the practice model or setting a member chooses. It continues to celebrate the diversity of talents and backgrounds of our members with the AAE Leadership Development Program. It includes new priority strategies aimed at supporting our current educator members and increasing the number of endodontists who teach.
The Board decided that the former goal focused on the dental profession was in need of revision and expansion. It was replaced by two different but related goals: Develop and maintain a body of knowledge to advance the specialty and Advocate for quality endodontic care.
The body of knowledge developed and maintained would include promoting endodontic studies utilizing the new Core Outcome Set, which will enhance the specialty by enabling endodontists to base their practice on a higher level of evidence and enhance the value that the dental profession places on endodontists. The body of knowledge will also include tracking provider and practice trends. The body of knowledge will inform policy going forward and aids in the development of clinical resources and assessment tools of value to endodontists and to the dental profession.
Advocating for quality endodontic care will utilize the body of knowledge developed and maintained for AAE’s growing advocacy role. More outward facing efforts of advocacy would have communities of interest looking to the AAE for our position on matters related to oral and systemic health at a state and federal level. Advocacy efforts will also increase awareness of endodontics’ relevance to oral and systemic health. The more inward focus of advocacy would be our efforts at optimizing coding and reimbursement for endodontic procedures as well as advocating that endodontic care performed by generalists be done to the same standard of practice as that performed by endodontists.
After our strategic planning exercise in October, AAE staff spent many hours refining language, adding outcomes, KPIs, strategies, and tactics necessary to implement the plan. Some further refining was done by AAE Executive Committee in collaboration with senior staff prior to the approval by the full Board of Directors.

Foundation for Endodontics
President’s Message
Research, Education, Outreach and Development
Dear Colleagues,
When the Foundation Trustees approved its new strategic plan, we added “engagement” to its mission. According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, definitions of engagement include to induce participation and to bring together. If you attended AAE23 in Chicago a few weeks ago, engagement was on center stage at the McCormick Center.
The Foundation booth positioned at the entrance of the exhibit hall was buzzing with activity at AAE23. Thank you to our Foundation volunteers and staff who manned the booth with lots of energy! We enjoyed interacting with everyone who stopped by the booth to say hello; ask a question; give feedback; inquire about a grant; or give a donation. Our booth felt like the hub of reconnecting with old friends but also making new ones! Thanks to Karen Rettig, Foundation team member, for capturing the energy with her camera, always catching our good side, and posting to socials!
At AAE23, the Foundation reception with the 60s vibe was the place to be! The room was filled with 60s dress, motifs, lighting, music, and drinks. Thank you to all who attended this special reception. While it may have been a rather noisy scene, the room was bursting with conversation, energy, and camaraderie. In that special moment in Chicago, clinicians, residents, educators, friends, family, and our corporate community came together with the mission to support the Foundation and elevate the specialty of endodontics. Thank you to all who gave of their time, talent, and treasures this year. Your support assisted in advancing the mission of the Foundation, and you make a difference in our specialty. As our Manhattens and Bikini Martinis were mixed on that Wednesday evening, our endodontic community was engaging! Thanks to Gary Rejebian, Foundation team member, for providing that 60s vibe.
Could AAE23 be the best annual session to date? Possibly! For the Foundation, it checked many impactful boxes. AAE23 was hosted in the city in which the Foundation was founded, and it was one of the most attended meetings in our history. AAE23 had the Foundation booth located on prime real estate, engaging all who entered the exhibit hall. AAE23 engaged our stakeholders at a 60s themed reception. AAE23 exceeded the Foundation’s fundraising goal. AAE23 celebrated two new educator development grants, Dr. Scott McClanahan scholarship and the Alliance Scholarship. AAE23 celebrated Dr. Frederico Martinho, the Foundation’s newest Endodontic Educator Fellowship Award recipient. AAE23 was awesome, and we are so excited to see what we can do with our newly engaged members of our endodontic community!
Domestic Access:
The Foundation for Endodontics’ and U.S. Endo Partners’ Domestic Access to Care Program aids endodontic specialists in providing access to free endodontic care to underserved patients in the United States. The Foundation believes every endodontist has the capacity to make a significant difference and is proud to empower specialists to serve patients and spread goodwill.
Union Rescue Mission
The Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry at the University of Southern California (USC) has worked with the Union Rescue Mission (URM) Dental Clinic for over 20 years, providing free dental care to Los Angeles’ homeless population in the Skid Row district. The clinic currently serves 1,380 patients annually, who are triaged by USC dental students under the supervision of faculty general dentists.
With help from a $10,000 Foundation for Endodontics grant, Yaara Berdan, DDS, MBA, will lead the URM Dental Clinic in performing more root canals onsite, ensuring that more patients receive the endodontic treatment they need as part of comprehensive rehabilitative services.
University of Maryland School of Dentistry
The endodontic and pediatric residents at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD) will collaborate to provide cross-disciplinary dental care to children of undocumented migrants. These children receive basic preventive and restorative oral healthcare through the school’s program for low-income and uninsured children, but pediatric endodontic care is not currently funded.
The $12,871 grant will enable these two departments to work together to save more young, permanent at-risk teeth. Further, Ina Griffin, DMD, will oversee the development of UMSOD’s pediatric-focused clinical and academic curriculum, resulting in graduates who are confident in their ability to treat children and adolescents.
With appreciation,
Margot Kusienski, D.M.D.
President

ABE: American Board of Endodontics
President’s Message–Your Board is Never Bored
Congratulations to our 74 new Diplomates!
My commute to work each day is mostly by train and, although it’s a long ride, it gives me time for reflection – sometimes wide awake and brimming with random thoughts and half-baked ideas, other times, not so much. For the past six years serving as a Director of the American Board of Endodontics, the greatest honor of my professional career, my thoughts have often turned to the ABE. In particular, how can the ABE encourage more endodontists to pursue Board certification while keeping our promise to all current and future Diplomates to maintain the rigor and relevance of this meaningful achievement?
Have we kept our promise to you? This year we will honor 74 new ABE Diplomates at the Grossman Ceremony on Thursday of AAE24. You are all welcome to attend and join us in congratulating our new Diplomates. In 2023, the ABE examined 196 Oral Exam candidates and reviewed 94 Case History Portfolios. The Written Exam was administered to 223 candidates through Pearson Vue on May 16, 2023. In addition, 81 ABE Diplomates completed their recertification requirement in 2023.
My sincere thanks to our dedicated group of past directors who continue to volunteer to serve as examiners for both the Oral Exam and Case History Portfolio. We simply could not examine this number of candidates each year without their help and support. We are also extremely fortunate to be supported by our incredibly dedicated and tireless ABE staff, Ivana Bevacqua, Patricia Scaletta, and Kerri Hannen. They have made my job much easier and do it all with intelligence, humor, and never a complaint. It has been a pleasure working with all of you.
One of our major projects for 2023, was a deep dive review and revision of our Case History Portfolio Examination Guidelines. Many changes were made after careful consideration and input from program directors, current Diplomates, and those on the path to Board certification. The entire Case History Portfolio committee, especially the Chair, Dr. Kent Sabey, and co-Chair Dr. Meetu Kohli, deserves special thanks for pushing to finish this project in time for the May 1, 2024 Case History Portfolio Exam submission date.
Our major project for 2024 is a complete Job Task Analysis (JTA) for all three exam components to ensure ongoing validity of the exam. The goal is to make sure our assessment process and content accurately reflects current endodontic practice and the best available evidence. Dr. Garry Myers is chairing the JTA committee (essentially the entire Board and Counselors, and a few outside content experts).
Although I have identified a few Directors by name for specific projects, it’s really the selfless work and synergy of the entire ABE Board of Directors that makes this organization so exceptional. Thank you to the entire Board and Counselors: Drs. Avina Paranjpe (incoming President), Brian Bergeron, Sami Chogle, Anibal Diogenes, Scott Doyle, Melissa Drum, Joseph Dutner, Meetu Kohli, Neville McDonald, Garry Myers, Frank Portell, Kent Sabey, and Renato Silva. I would also like to welcome our two newest Board members: Drs. Keith Boyer and Paul Falcon (beginning after AAE24). The Board has a self-nomination process that allows any Diplomate to nominate themself to serve on the Board. It is a huge commitment, but something you will always remember.
Now back to our promises kept theme: Let’s see a show of (virtual) hands — Did you, at any point in your endo specialty training, or even as early as the interview process, promise your program director that you would become Board certified? Yes? If you kept your promise – congratulations and thank you! If not, why not now? The best gift you could give your program director is to become Board certified (second best, possibly a new Porsche).
Some of you may be familiar with the classic children’s book and animated movie, The Little Engine That Could. For those that have forgotten the tale, it’s a story about a small, but very determined, train that helps a much larger broken-down train make it over a mountain pass for a very special delivery, when other trains would not. It’s a lesson about the value of optimism and hard work (Reference: Wikipedia – my favorite non-evidence-based source). It could also be a metaphor for the pursuit of Board certification. It’s not easy – if it were, it would have no value – but I’m confident that anyone interested and motivated enough to read this letter has what it takes to become Board certified.
For real life stories about the journey to ABE certification from a wide range of new Diplomates, please see the “All A-Board” series in the AAE Communique.
There is always more room on the ABE train – I promise you won’t regret the journey!
